Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club

Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club dates to 1875 and is generally recognized as the oldest surviving golf course in North America, first laid out by John Geale Dickson on the Fort George common. The nine holes run along the Lake Ontario shoreline at the mouth of the Niagara River, several of them elevated just above the water, with Fort Mississauga and its earthworks sitting among holes one, two and eight and Fort Niagara visible across the river in New York State. The course plays to a par of 36, about 3,000 yards per nine, with two par 5s; the greens on the first, second and eighth are original. The club hosted the first international golf tournament, the Niagara International, in 1895.
