Trail is a West Kootenay city built on the steep banks of the Columbia River, close to the Washington State border in southeastern British Columbia. It grew around the Teck smelter, still the dominant landmark on the riverbank, and retains a distinctive Italian-Canadian heritage in its neighbourhoods and food. Highway 3B connects it to Rossland and the Red Mountain ski area 10 km uphill, while Highway 22 follows the river south to the border and north toward Castlegar. Golf here means Birchbank Golf Club, an 18-hole course on a bench above the Columbia between Trail and Castlegar, in one of the warmest, driest valleys in the province.
