About Crawford Bay
Crawford Bay is a small village on the east shore of Kootenay Lake, tucked between the water and the Purcell Mountains on Highway 3A. It is best known for its cluster of working artisan studios - a glassblower, a blacksmith, a broom maker and a weaver all operate within a few hundred metres of each other - which makes it an unusually busy stop for a community of a few hundred people. Reaching it from the Nelson side means riding the Balfour to Kootenay Bay ferry, a free 35-minute crossing that is among the longest free ferry rides anywhere. Golf is the other reason people come: Kokanee Springs Resort, an 18-hole Norman H. Woods design opened in 1968, sits just above the village with the Purcells rising directly behind it.
