Salt Spring Island is the largest of BC's Southern Gulf Islands, lying in the Salish Sea between Vancouver Island and the mainland and reached only by BC Ferries or floatplane. Ganges, on the island's east side, is the main village and the site of the well-known Saturday market; Fulford Harbour and Vesuvius Bay are the two smaller ferry settlements. The interior is hilly and pastoral, rising to Baynes Peak on Mount Maxwell, with farms, vineyards and studios along the roads between. Golf on the island is a relaxed nine-hole affair at Salt Spring Island Golf Club on Lower Ganges Road, a short drive from the village centre.
