Smithers lies in the Bulkley Valley of northwestern British Columbia, directly beneath the glaciated bulk of Hudson Bay Mountain on Highway 16, the Yellowhead. The town is the service centre for the valley, with an alpine-themed Main Street, a regional airport, and a strong reputation for steelhead fishing on the Bulkley and Morice rivers. Ski hill in winter, hiking and paddling in summer, it is one of the busiest small towns on the Highway 16 corridor between Prince George and Terrace. Smithers Golf Club's 18 holes sit on the valley floor near the airport, with the mountain filling the western skyline.
